The CNPA Mission:
To champion the ideals of a free press in our democratic society
and to promote the quality and economic health of California newspapers.
Serving California newspaper since 1888
For 122 years, the California Newspaper Publishers Association has protected the interests of newspapers throughout the state, from the smallest weekly to the largest metropolitan daily. CNPA operates from offices in the state's capital and is governed by a 35-member board of directors drawn from its more than 800 daily, weekly and campus newspaper members. Services to CNPA-member newspapers include:
Legislative lobbying and legal support
Advertising networks
News and publications
Better Newspapers Contest
Employment services
Annual Press Summit and Convention
Training and student support
Three corporations
The California Newspaper Publisher Association family consists of three separate corporations:
California Newspaper Publishers Association
The California Newspaper Publishers Association (CNPA) is a nonprofit trade association representing the daily and weekly newspapers of California. The Association is governed by a 35-member Board of Directors elected by Active Member newspapers.
CNPA Services Inc.
CNPA Services, Inc. (CSI) was established in July 1992 to accommodate an emphasis on entrepreneurial ventures. CSI is a wholly owned, for-profit subsidiary of the nonprofit corporation, California Newspaper Publishers Association (CNPA). Under the dual structure, the nonprofit corporation, CNPA, owns all shares of CSI and has all of the rights that come with ownership. All Association members receive CNPA's traditional member services through a contract with CSI, and CNPA is provided with the mechanism to reap the maximum benefit of its entrepreneurial efforts by eliminating the tax on "unrelated business income," which occurs when profit is generated in a nonprofit corporation.
CNPA Foundation
The CNPA Foundation is a nonprofit corporation organized in October 1993 to raise funds through tax deductible contributions for internships and other journalism education activities. The formation of the Foundation enhances CNPA's ability to raise funds for journalism education because of tax-deductible donations.
