CNPA awarded 480 first- and second-place awards for the 2009 Better Newspapers contest at its annual meeting Friday night in Monterey.
Nine first-place General Excellence winners took the stage to celebrate their bragging rights as the overall best of the best in their divisions for California. Nearly 4,000 entries from newspapers across the state entered their best work in 28 categories and nine circulation divisions.
General Excellence is the most coveted, but writing, photography and many other categories offer some of the toughest competition anywhere.
All award-winning plaques, aside from the nine General Excellence winners, are being direct shipped to each newspaper this year. Plaques should arrive in the next week to 10 days.
For a complete listing of all winners by category and by newspaper, as well as a sample of numerous winning entries, see our

About the Better Newspapers Contest
The Better Newspapers Contest (BNC) is an annual newsroom competition that is sponsored by CNPA for the purpose of recognizing the most outstanding journalistic achievements published by daily and weekly California newspapers in one calendar year. Dailies and weeklies compete separately among themselves based on their circulation. All awards and plaques are issued in the name of the newspaper as the official contest entrant submitting entries produced by its staff or its regular contributors.
About Student Newspaper General Excellence
The Student Newspaper General Excellence category offers three separate divisions of competition: high school, two-year Colleges, and four-year Universities. One 1st-place and one 2nd-place plaque is awarded in each of the three divisions of competition.
